A/W 1938 Elsa Schiaparelli Haute Couture gold insect choker necklace from the 'Pagan Collection.' Very similar featured in the Met Museum. Gilded gold-tone enameled gilt metal with enamel branches and leaves, featuring sleeping insect details. Inspired by Botticelli's masterpieces and a signature interest in the surreal, this necklace is a rare piece of Elsa Schiaparelli's masterful work.
Of their own necklace from the same collection, the Met Museum describes: "Schiaparelli's fall 1938 collection was rife with references to flora and fauna, inspired by the Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli's lush depictions of spring, specifically in 'The Birth of Venus' and 'Primavera'...Coined the 'pagan' collection, motifs such as insects, leaves and flowers were in abundance as embroidery, buttons and jewelry, such as this beautifully crafted one-of-a-kind necklace. Artistically rendered in enameled gilt metal...the insect is a subtle masterful Schiaparelli touch that would likely only be noticed on second glance, giving a surreal tone to this otherwise glistening and naturalistic ornamental piece."
An extraordinarily rare, museum quality piece. Note that this period of Schiaparelli jewelry was largely unsigned; the same necklace in Met Museum is also unsigned. Reference imagery is showcased for inspiration only; e-commerce images feature the exact piece offered. In very good vintage condition with light wear throughout consistent with age; insects have been restored to original coloration by professional restoration artist.
