A/W 1994 Maison Martin Margiela one-of-one 'Artisanal' military surplus cargo skirt. Black maxi cargo skirt constructed out of 1960's cargo pants - deconstructed design with cargo style pockets at lower hip and raw edges throughout. Concealed front button closures that can be styled open or closed as desired, with visible buttons at deep, functional side slit pockets and at waist. Fabric Contents: 100% Cotton. Rare, early 1990's Maison Martin Margiela piece. In excellent vintage condition with no flaws to note; distress and marks throughout are intentional feature of the construction utilizing vintage materials.
By re-imaging a traditionally more masculine pant into a cargo skirt, Margiela playfully subverts the silhouette and androgenizes the piece. In an interview for The New York Times, Martin Margiela stated: "Every designer looks to retro stuff...I think I always look forward, but it is a nicer feeling for myself to go forward by looking backwards...Authenticity is more and more important. Instead of imitating originals, I decided to make complete reproductions."
